this afternoon on the subway i was subjected to the most annoying music. i couldn't hear enough of it to be sure, but it sounded vaguely oriental, and also somewhat whiny... and it was coming from the headphones of the guy across the car... we're talking a good 6 feet away. and i could hear it... my only satisfaction to being subjected to someone else's personal music is that, at that volume, he has probably suffered hearing loss...
and now i feel guilty about not feeling guilty for thinking that....
for my liturgics class (we are studying the theology of rituals) the professor assigned us two churches to go and observe, but only as architectural space, not while worship was going on. so today i went to look at them. one is st. thomas episcopal church, and the other is st. peter's lutheran church. st. thomas' is a new york city institution, and has an extraordinary school associated with it > primarily they are known for their men and boys choir (which now admits girls), and my grandfather was an alumnus from there. you cannot miss that it is a church since it is a very gothic construction, and extremely beautiful inside. st. peter's, on the hand, if it did not have the words "st. peter's church" over the door, would not be recognizable as a church. very modern in architecture, and very angular and geometric (in a trapezoidal sort of way), it is made of the same dark gray stone as the citicorp building that stands behind it.
inside, st. thomas' looks like everyone's idea of "church". st. peter's looks like a cross between a sunken living room, an ampitheatre, and an office. st. thomas' is grand and majestic, while st. peter's is informal and intimate... this will be an interesting paper... too bad it's due on tuesday and i have to work like thunder to complete it...

and which church did you like better?
ryc: yes, both the ones you mentioned were de Clerambaults, according to Wikipedia. However, I doubt that the majority of stalkers are de Clerambaults - I imagine a lot of stalkers aren't delusional that their objects love them back, which is the defining characteristic of the syndrome
glad you were interested
RYC---i don't think you'll be offended if you appear on Stern...all depends on whether you can take a joke or not:lol:
It was only a few years ago...well maybe a decade...time is SO non-Euclidian for me...i learnt that the St Patrick's across the street from Rockefeller Center was NOT THE ORIGINAL:eek: The original is down in the Little Italy/Chinatown area, and looks kind of like one of those Spanish fortresses...
i guess i've always been a natural-born liturgicist since i can seldom pass a church/mosque/temple/etc. without wanting to "check it out"...especially during services...hell, if they weren't a bunch of kidnappers, i'd even want to check out a Scientologist service:fun:
i'm on public transit all the time, and have to deal with idiots and their headphones.
so you're going to be a priest?
The pictures is taken from Chocas, in Nampula Province, Mozambique - one of my favourite holiday places.
And no, I'm not filthy rich to go there: I live in Moz.
Yes, bio... and my testicles are almost half the size of a hamster as well.
I asked God for the brains of an Asian. His aim is a little off.
I know how it is....waiting to get on the bus, there was a man singing to the ringtone on his cell phone. And at that moment, I wanted to just slap him and throw his cell phone into oncoming traffic. And then, when I got on the bus, there was this guy listening to some old Bobby Brown songs, (not that there's anything wrong with that) but he was bobbing his head, and doing little "motions" to the words....needless to say, both of those men were creepy. :jealous:
Anyways, ryc: You are only an old fart if you make yourself one. It seems to me that you are about 40? No offense intended, just a guess. :lookaround:----But yeah, my doctor said to not pay attention to any of that BMI mess, because it doesn't calculate muscle tone and things like that. And, because if that was the case, she'd be obese too, and she is 4'11" and weighs no more than 120 pounds.
Phew! And for the poem....I like it. I'm glad you read it  And, yes, I am being MUCH pickier about who I make friends with.
"haven't even gotten close enough to have the premature issue issue" until well into college.."
heh, yeah, well. I'm in my fourth, and last year, so I better get started soon
RYC ~ I think you're right; I doubt if God would think that our social desires to over-achieve are very good for us at all. Remember, one of His first commands to His creations, was to honor the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of *rest,* no? :goodjob:
Whoa...I love the avatar...how can I get one?
nvm...I figured it out....
the modern architecture of St. Peters reminds me of something.
The other day I went to see the opera in the new opera house they just built in my city. They are very proud of it, and from what I read, went on about what a beautiful marvel it is.
But, if you ask me, it is a piece of crap. A theatre or opera house should be grand, beautiful, intricatly designed, and luxurious. Red and gold, frescos, that kind of thing everywhere. Not burnished steel and glass. Modern art and modern architecture are ruining peoples' idea of beauty. A splat on a piece of paper is not art.
